Pillars of Islam

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

There are 5 pillars in Islam. They do not make up the whole religion. These 5 pillars hold up the rest of the religion.

  1. Testimony of faith (Shahada) The testimony to become a Muslim is as follows: Ash hadu an la ilaha illa allah, wa ash hadu ana muhammadun rasullulah. The meaning of this testimony is: I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is a prophet of Allah (S.W.T).

  2. Prayer (Salah) Muslims must pray 5 times a day. There are set times for when they are to be performed. An example of a prayer is Fajr, which is to be prayed at sunrise. Each prayer takes between 5-10 minutes to complete. It helps you maintain a relationship with Allah (S.W.T). The prayers are the listed: Fajr (Sunrise), Duhur (Noon), Asr (Afternoon), Maghrib (Sunset) and Isha (Night) or when its dark.

  3. Charity (Zakah) Zakah is a compulsory charity for muslims who aren’t poor. They have to have 3 ounces of gold or 7762.87$ New Zealand dollars. This charity must go to the poor and needy and not to mosques, schools, etc. The charity you must give is 2.5% of the money one has earned in one year. That's one ($1) out of $40.

  4. Fasting (Sawm) Ramadan is a month in the Islamic calendar in which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset every day during that month. They mustn’t eat or drink while fasting. It teaches you to control yourself. After the month of Ramadan is over, Muslims celebrate their hard work with a celebration called Eid-ul-F`itr.

  5. Pilgrimage (Hajj) Muslims who are physically and financially able to go to Makkah during the pilgrimage must do so at least once in their life. During Hajj, Muslims all wear the same clothes – two pieces of white cloth. This is so each pilgrim feels a sense of equality. White, black, rich and poor are all equal in front of Allah (S.W.T).
